The Beauty of Northern Alabama

By Harry Hanks

For anyone, anywhere in the world, Northern Alabama can be a very diverse, and interesting vacation destination.

When one thinks of the Southeastern United States, sometimes the picture of bare fields of cotton, and a hot, flat, boring landscape emerge. Even though that picture is beautiful in it's own way, it is not always someone's version of a perfect leisurely getaway destination. Northern Alabama is very far removed from this stereotypical mindset of the south, and has rolling hills, some flat land, mountains, lakes, and is some of the most beautiful land in the world.

If you are not into the outdoors as much, it has some very interesting cities as well. On the western end one has Muscle Shoals, and Florence, two river towns with not only your typical fast food places, movie theaters, and shopping galore, but it has some historical and quaint downtown areas, specifically downtown Florence, and Muscle Shoals, with art, antiques, coffee shops, and excellent food fair to choose from, and it is a very socially sophisticated area as well.

As you travel east, along the interstate that connects Eastern Alabama with the west, you will notice some breathtakingly beautiful lakes on either side of the interstate. There are rest areas situated nestled in the woods, above the lake that are fun for the kids, and interesting for the adults.

As you get into Huntsville on your way east, you will notice all the signs pointing to the Huntsville Space Center. It rivals anything Disneyworld has to offer, and one could spend a week or more here with his/her family. Top of the line hotels are here, and the actual city of Huntsville is one of the author's personal favorites in all the world. It has a "new" look to it, and is pleasantly laid out, and the people are some of the nicest you will find anywhere, as a whole.

I could write numerous paragraphs on just Huntsville alone, but I will move on the the far Eastern side of Northern Alabama. We will start at the eastern top part of Alabama and work down, and one will still, go through a very diverse area, both in geography, and people, in this mini excursion.

First there is the Scottsboro area, and honestly, I seem to always have bypassed this small town, so really am unable to comment on it. But south of Scottsboro, you have Fort Payne, and it is a little country redneck town that has it's own character, and is a place to visit, if only to see the original hometown of the giant country band "Alabama", not to mention the mountainous terrain of the bottom tip, of the Appalachian Mountains. There are canyons in the east of Fort Payne, that remind one of a "green", Grand Canyon, with gulf's(that is what locals call canyons) going in all directions as far as the eye can see.

Finally, we make our way southwest to Guntersville, and this is another quaint little river town, now surrounded by a beautiful lake. It is as beautiful, and has as much character, as any seaport town one has seen. There are two ways into this city, and both go over large bodies of water. The city itself is very historical, and kept up perfectly, with the great downtown arts atmosphere one looks for in this type of city.

I hope I have sparked the readers' interest enough to visit this area, for once there, you will always go back, and some never leave.

Contributor's Note

The author of this article is in no way associated with Alabama, or any travel agencies, and actually lives 300 miles NE of the area. His familiarity comes from a traveling sales company he and his wife ran in the 90's, and that is when he discovered this gem of an area. Please, keep it a secret, and only tell those that would appreciate and respect it, and not take advantage of the great locals that live there and make it what it is.
