Life of Metal Halide Bulbs
By Harry Hanks
For a user of metal halide lighting systems, when a bulb(lamp) goes bad it can be a scary experience, for the first thing that goes through your mind, is that the ballast is out, but usually it is just the bulb. If your light is powered on, and it goes off in a minute or two, and then comes back on in about 15 minutes, it is a bad bulb. They usually only last about 4 to 6 months, but can work like this much longer, but the light is dimmer, and it needs to be replaced. The lower the watt of the lights, the shorter the bulb life generally.

Contributor's Note
High Pressure Sodium Bulbs generally just get dimmer than actually go off and on, as Metal Halides do, and seem to last about twice as long.
