Commonsense Techniques to Avoid Internet Scams

By Harry Hanks

This article deals with common sense actions one can take when dealing with an internet site and/or company, before one decides to do any business with them.

The first thing one should do, before sending any email, signing up, or especially doing any purchasing from a company, is to Google their site address, in parenthesis, with the word "scam" included in the search(example:"lowlifes.com" scam).
Look closely at the results, and if someone has been scammed by the company, it will show up.

The second thing one should then do, especially if the first search brought up questionable actions by the company, and even if it did not, is to do a search of the companies name on the Better Business Bureau's web page. Make sure you check the box below the search, that indicates you want to search on every BBB site in the country. This will usually spell it out for you. Remember that one or two bad reports on a company can be disgruntled ex-employees, enemies of the business owner, or even competitors of the business owner, so use your own judgment when considering results. But, on the other had if the company has a long list of unresolved complaints, thank the BBB that you were not included in this list in the future.

Another great consumer reporting site is Ripoffreport.com, and it works in a similar way to the Better Business Bureau's site, but is a little easier to do a report on a company.

Remember, a little research up front, can save a lot of heartache later on. The author recommends doing a search on even familiar companies, for they can be the worst offenders, because they assume that most people will not check before doing business with them, and sometimes run on a previous reputation built before the internet.

This process, even if the company turns out to be OK, can also educate the consumer on how best to get a good value out of the company, by using info gained from his/her search to be informed about the particular company's business practices, and even discounts offered.
