Ancient American Wisdom

By Harry Hanks

One foggy morning long, long, ago somewhere in what is now America a small Native American boy and his great grandfather, the Tribal Elder, were contemplating the miracle of birth that they both had just witnessed. A young bride had just had her first beautiful child, a little girl, whom the grandfather named Morning Cloud, as was the custom in that particular clan of the larger Wanahamanobslobed tribe of North America. Then the innocent child who would someday become a tribal Elder in the clan, broke the deafening silence of dawn with a simple yet powerfully important question.
"Great Grandfather Croaking Frog, how do you know what to call all the babies you have chosen names for when they were born? Does the Great
Maker of Life come and tell you? I will need to know since as I take over someday inthe future I will be handling that important task." the miniature little warrior asked with as much earnest as he could muster.
"Well he doesn't actually speak to me the names as you and I are talking to each other here, but he does communicate the name to me with a sign." the old man replied with a tone of thankfulness in his voice, relieved that the youngster was going to undertake the job of naming all the newborns very seriously and was already preparing for the responsibility, even though it would be many years before he would choose the name that would designate an innocents status in the tribe from the day the infant is born till the day that he meets the Great Creator in the sky.
"What kind of sign?" the lad quickly followed up, a slight bewilderment in his voice as he spoke.
The ancient warrior thought a moment and decided it was time for his great grandson to know how he will fulfill his future burden of sorts, since the name he will come up with for each child he oversees birthing for will stick with the child all of it's life."You see, as each child is born, and after I am sure that both the mother and the baby are healthy and its alright for me to leave, I will step outside the birthing tent. As I emerge I will look and take note of what I see. That is how I determine what each newborn is called. That is the sign the Great Spirit sends me."
All of a sudden the little fellows face lit up as it came together for him in his mind, and he understood what the old man was saying. "I see! Like when Running Deer came into the world we saw all of those deer heading so fast over the hill, there must have been fifty of them. That was the most we had ever seen, much less running as fast as all of them were going!!!"
By now the proud patriarch had a big grin of relaxation and contentment. for he knew the boy understood the task ahead of him. "That is correct son". he said nodding his head in agreement as he spoke.
"And I remember when White Haired Beaver was born right before we heard the racket in the food pit, and we came out and saw the great leader of the beaver clan running away after eating his fill!" the excited future leader shouted!
"Yes, and the little miracle we just saw come into the world this foggy morning will be called "Early Cloud", because of the fog that I noticed when I came out and saw first light."
At this point both great grandfather and grandson looked at each others eyes and the bond between them was strengthened and solidified, the elder realizing his great grandson was going to be a capable and understanding link to the Great Maker of the Universe in grasping the sign that He sends as each child in the tribe is born, and the grandchild very happy that the grandfather had so much faith in his grandson to go ahead and give him such powerful information even at such a young and tender age.
Then just as quickly as it began, the verbal exchange ended and the grandfather, taking over his more usual role of elder said, "Well little 'Dog Taking a Dump', why don't we head over and see what your mother 'Boil Busting on Butt,' has fixed us for breakfast!"
At that final statement they both slowly meandered towards the cooking tepee, each silent in his own private thoughts.
